Training: At least 50% of each crew, including the captain, has to have taken both theoretical (classroom) and practical (hands-on, in-the-water) training courses within five years before the start, as specified in the Notice of Race 4.2.4: 4.2.4: At least 50% but not fewer than two members of a crew, including the Skipper, shall have undertaken training within the five years before the start of the race in both OSR 6.02 topics for theoretical sessions, and OSR 6.03 topics, including practical, hands-on sessions. This means that the course has to have been taken in the period between June 26, 2006 and June 26, 2011. 2. Fire and pyrotechnics training are now required by US Sailing in order to get full certification. 3. Courses available are: A. Tiverton, RI, Liferaft & Survival, March 6: Fire/pyrotechnics training. B. MIT, Cambridge, Mass., March 19-20: Theoretical classroom on the first day; practical hands-on takes place the second day. No fire/pyrotechnics. C. Bayshore, LI, NY, March 26: Practical hands-on and fire/pyrotechnics. D. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, April 2-3: Two-day course with theoretical classroom, practical hands-on, and fire/pyrotechnics. Full certification. E. Tiverton, RI, Liferaft & Survival, April 16: Fire/pyrotechnics training. F. Tiverton, RI, Liferaft & Survival, private sessions by arrangement: Minimum four people at $225 per person. G. United Kingdom: 60+ locations offer training courses administered and licensed through the Royal Yachting Administration (RYA). H. European continent: Courses are available through national authorities. Information can be obtained via the following websites:
4. Medical training: Please note that at least two of each crew has to have a Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent and that the course must have been taken in the year prior to the start. This means in the period June 26, 2010 to June 26, 2011, as specified in the Notice of Race 4.2.5 and the Offshore Sailing Regulations 6.01, as follows: 4.2.5: At least two members of the crew shall hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate or equivalent and should be familiar with the management of medical emergencies that may occur at sea including hypothermia, and radio communications operations for obtaining medical advice by radio. Each of these crew members shall also have undertaken the training required by OSR 6.01. Important: OSR 6.01 specifies that the crew that have the medical training must also be fully certified within the last five years for the safety course. "Safety course" means full certification: theoretical, hands-on, and (in the U.S.) fire/pyrotechnics training. 5. Diving training, while desirable, is not required.
