The green flash

We've finally gotten some really great weather.  We escaped the fog in the late afternoon, picked up some stable wind from the port quarter and have been spinnaker reaching ever since.  The sunset was magnificent, and everyone saw the green flash, most for the first time.  Spectacular!

We've had the same great breeze all night and as morning comes, we're running downhill with the big kite, surfing down some moderate sized waves and really enjoying the sail.

Green flashes and green rays are optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise, when a green spot is visible, usually for no more than a second or two, above the sun, or it may resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset point. Green flashes are a group of phenomena stemming from different causes, and some are more common than others. They usually are seen at an unobstructed horizon, such as over the ocean.
